Congratulations to all the groups involved in the 01SJ Adobe Global Youth Voices program!!! 01SJ AGYV culminated in an exhibition at The Tech’s New Venture Hall June 4-8, 2008.

There was an abundance of incredibly positive feedback and praise for the projects on display in the exhibition. Everyone who came through the exhibition was impressed by the level of work generated by the 11-21 year olds involved in the program.

On a day-to-day basis, the exhibition drew approximately 150-200 visitors. So, the work of your youth was seen by many! To facilitate the visits to the exhibition, Grant Wilson, an amazing local artist (and just plain wonderful human being!) was on-hand to describe, and in some cases demonstrate the projects to those with questions. The reception on Saturday, June 7th at 6pm was a huge success with a few hundred people from the town of San Jose and the 01SJ festival in attendance. It was a lively and fun event and celebration of the efforts of the youth involved in AGYV. The Saturday workshops and demonstrations by the groups in attendance were also incredibly well-attended and a nice opportunity for the youth and/or artists involved with the projects to speak directly to the public about the work.

There is also a video podcast of the exhibition that will be posted as soon as it is edited. There is a great deal of documentation.

To contextualize the exhibition, the following text met visitors as they entered the space:

In a time with seemingly unlimited technological resources and a generation of youth possessing the undeniable capacity to use such tools for innovative, critical and creative practice, the opportunity to hone and support such development needs to be seized. But how to properly support such an endeavor?

“The real issue is creating a level playing field for everybody,” states Muhammad Yunus, author of Banker to the Poor: Micro-lending and the Battle Against World Poverty and inspiration for the 01SJ Adobe Global Youth Voices program at the 01SJ Festival. As a result of Yunus’s work, which encourages solidarity amongst those in need and a culture of collaboration, 01SJ initiated a micro-grant program via funding provided by Adobe Systems, Incorporated. With this program, 01SJ has been able to support and highlight 17 different international youth digital art projects—from Cairo to Macedonia to New York City to San Jose.

The micro-grant program was intended to inspire a variety of international artists, art collectives, and established non-profit arts organizations and institutions to support the creation of new work by young digital artists (ages 11-21 years). The pieces on view in this exhibition are the result of the micro-lending program. Each of the 17 groups selected for the program was awarded a micro-grant of $500 to regrant and/or support youth in their community to develop individual or collaborative projects. Each group was also granted an additional $500 to document the process of working with the youth in their program, how and why the micro-grant was spent, and in so doing: a unique view into their community and circumstances.

A blog site reflecting the documentation of each group was created to lend a deeper understanding and appreciation for this work: http://01sjadobeglobalyouthvoices.blogspot.com. A viewing station for the blog has been installed inside the exhibition, providing immediate access to how each group defines and shares their methodologies for bringing youth together with art and technology.

Youth media projects from Adobe Youth Voices – the Adobe Foundation’s global philanthropy initiative – are also on display.

The 01SJ Adobe Global Youth Voices exhibition represents an exciting spectrum of work being done within the global arts community to further the expressive ability of youth around the world through new tools. More importantly, it is a statement as to what is possible with support, collaboration and the passion to use technology creatively for the purpose of expanding minds and options for finding a voice within the world.

On June 7 2008 at the TECH museum in San Jose, all 18 programs of Adobe Global Youth Voices came together in one fantastic setting! Special thanks to Liz Slagus, the coordinator and to Grant Wilson, the facilitator at the site. For Hot Sun Foundation, the Global Youth Voices helped us reach our goal of making the KIBERA CONNECTION, the title of the video prepared by Kibera youth to introduce their community, the largest slum in east Africa, located in Nairobi, Kenya. Pamela Collett, representing Hot Sun Foundation, particularly enjoyed the opportunity to meet youth from other digital art programs. Thanks to Adobe for sponsoring this innovative approach for youth worldwide.

Me, Macauley, Rebecca and Liane went to the secret pond to film some footage of water reflections and water snails. It was very fun because I was filming, taking pictures and also trying to find water snails. I took some pictures and filmed the flowers around and in the pond. After lunch my partner Macauley and me was scanning some pictures on Mrs Hendy's Laptop. It was brilliant!

On Tuesday 19th of May (third session) Bonongton Jounior School came to Top Valley. My name is Tiegan, I went to the frog pond which is a very nice place then I went to the garden and filmed many things in the garden. By now I feel a member of Top Valley school. On Wednesday we went on a tour around the school then went back and worked on the computers, scanning and editing. We have also had a lot of fun so far everyone is working together and getting along. All this artwork we are making is going to be presented by Theresa in California. I feel nervous about my work being shown.

Hello I am Jamal. My favourite thing about the project is when we went to Hucknall Road Walkway and found things I wouldn't ever noticed before. When I saw the woodland pathway I filmed earlier projected on the wall back in class i thought it looked like you could walk down into it with all the leaves moving, the colours and the shapes with the sunshine falling through the leaves. The birds song actually stands out from everything else and it belongs there it feels right when you're there in the woodland.

freeDimensional facilitated two youth - Fatima from Iraq & Abdel Salem from Sudan - to participate in the Adobe Youth Voices workshop on Culture & Identity with 15 other Egyptian participants, thereby creating a mini-time capsule of their impressions living in Egypt (outside of their own country) and in relation to the IHSPH time capsule of immigrant youth who have moved to New York City from over 40 countries.

Additonally, freeDimensional worked with Cardboard Citizens and Creative Exchange to conduct a playback theatre workshop with a group of Sudanese and Egyptian youth.

Lastly, freeDimensional facilitated a relationship between one of the theatre trainees, Ronald Reagan, a Sudanese refugee and his music and theatre group, VIP, and Actors for Refugees in order to present a monologue on the theme of 'exile' for the 11th International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM) Conference in Cairo in January 2008.

The Project Walkway wrap up

On the final day of Project Walkway the girls had interviewed each other while Norene recorded on video for the Project Walkway DVD. These interviews would be part of the Zer01 exhibition. We did practice walks on the red carpet runway. We stood in the conference room to do some last minute shoe repair making sure that they were ok so that there were no malfunctions on the runway. One of the engineers, Jess, painted the girls toe nails blue. While waiting for the show to start the girls were nervous but also very excited. All the participants that walked the runway had to wait in the R&D Lab until their names were called. They all did very well and had personality while walking which made the crowd smile and applaud. Their shoes were all unique in their way which attracted many interviews from the people that were watching. The girls were interviewed for the Sci-Fi channel and for a pod cast by the New York Academy of Sciences. Once they are online we will post them on the blog to keep you updated. Now the shoes are going to the exhibition in San Jose for the Zer01 new media art festival. In the fall we will be going to Bayard Rustin Academy for Art and Music, where we will be presenting the shoes to the students. Keep checking our website to see what we're up to.

We're hard at work on our project here in Mountain View, we've got the code working to display questions and I think we can trigger them using sound now. Today we'll put it all together and try it!

Our project will show questions on a monitor prompting people to tell stories about how they envision the future, then record people's answers, and finally add them to a database. Others can listen to the collected stories on headphones, and we'd like to put the best ones online as well. It's quite exciting!

Sorry that we haven't written in quite some time, but we have been busily preparing for our film screening on May 30, which includes five pieces from ZERO1 grant recipients! The students have been working hard these past few weeks, finalizing their work and getting feedback from their mentors.

Last week the students completed their pieces and the big unveiling happens tomorrow at the ICA theater. We had quite the range of projects: a documentary about bottled water vs. tap water, a 5.1 surround sound piece on pain (experimental documentary), a playful comedy about a daydreamer, a narrative on what happens when a friend ventures down a path you don't approve of, and a short film that explores the moment one teen decides to muster up a little chutzpah. We'll let you know when we post the films on our blog.

The project Consumer vs. User 2.0, organized by LINE Initiative and Movement, has ended and we all voted on the best piece that came out from the participants.

Some of them created complex designs, some of them music videos, but the winner is only one, and we all agreed that she was a very interesting, creative, hardworking and valuable member to our project community.

Hello everyone from Top Valley Secondary

(High) School, UK. We are on our last workshop session before our artwork is flown to and projected onto the outside walls of the

Museum of Technology, San Jose.

Ever Child Matters and Environment officer, Caroline Hendy co-ordinated the project for a group of Top Valley and Bonington Juniour school students.

We have alot to tell the ZERO1 youth group about our trips to visit secret city ponds and Hucknall Road Walkway, an ancient strip of woodland with Simon Jenkins, Nottingham's Park Ranger. We learnt how to film, photograph and draw insects, flowers and water snails and then brought the footage back to be edited.

Digital artist Theresa Caruana who led the project helped us to decide how we would show our images in California. Here are some of our thoughts about the project and photos showing what we did.

When I started to begin the art project we went to a room to think about what we could do and we saw a projection that Theresa had done in Saint Ann’s. We then went to a secret pond to find creatures and bugs so we could record them so it was possible to project them onto the wall. Then when we recorded the bugs we saw how they looked on film. In the next session we had fun in a forest and I played in some sand to find some worms or centipedes. We have now been split into buddies. The year 7’s with one year 6 and 3 year 5’s from Bonington Primary School. I am now paired up with Jake to create the blog and artwork. I have loved this project and would do it again anytime.

GAP Media Project - a late hello!

Hello!
I am writing from the GAP media project! We are joining in on this conversation late in the game but are very excited to be adding our news. The GAP media project is based in Champaign, IL. We've had quite an interesting time working on digital stories and have just wrapped up two stories that will be sending to San Jose. We met every Saturday, working in a big, empty computer lab on the University of Illinois campus. Over the course of the past few months, the girls in the project have reflected on aspects of their lives and communities they wanted to tell as a digital story. Some decided that they didn't want to put their lives on tape while others chose to make video letters to family members from whom they had been estranged. We are excited to share what we've finished with all of you and will send more reflections as we wrap up the process.

Figured it out

Okay, I figured out how to make a looping DVD. For anyone that has Adobe Encore (I have version CS3), follow these steps:

1. File > New Project

2. File > Import as... > Timeline (find your project file)

3. Window > Flowchart

4. on the flowchart screen, right click your project file and click Specify Link...

5. Click on your file name in the specify link window (this will make it so that each time your DVD gets to the end it will automatically jump back to the begining and play again)

6. Now you're ready to burn a DVD, go to File > Build, then chose what you want to do next.

It's even easier than it sounds.

Creating a Looping DVD

CDM Project Almost Complete!

Hello fellow youth media orgs,

Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose's project is almost complete and it is very exciting to see. What we have come up with is 8 individual video slideshows (some done individually, some done by small groups) of a youth photography perspective of Silicon Valley, all based on how each youth views her or his community, the camera a medium to capture this experience. All 8 projects will be put togetaher into one large piece for submission. THey will also be displayed on our website, www.getchy.com. SOme of the pieces have already been displayed to the public in our museum.

The process:

First teach the youth the technical and stylistic aspects of photography and let them practices taking pictures, followed by a discussion/critique of their practice photos while viewing them.

Next, brainstorm a bit on community and San Jose. WHat have the kids seen/experiences while living here and while volunteering in different CBOs in downtown and central San Jose.

Next we spent a lot of time wandering around downtown and some of the surrounding neighborhoods, looking at things, trying to see things that we normally wouldn't ntoice or things we see everyday but in a different light.

We then taught the kids Adobe Premiere (some already knew it so they got started), then we had the kids put all the pics together in such a way that it expressed thw thoughts, opinions, emotions, and ideas that they gained and felt during the photographing process.

The results are pretty amazing and we are looking forward to submitting our piece soon.

Usernomics 1.0 with SFAI City Studio + NEXMAP

Usernomics 1.0 Update - Part 1

Usernomics 1.0 is a hacktivist workshop employing models of waste reclamation, recycling and reuse. This user-friendly workshop begins with discussion about the consequences (social, ecological) of the computer industry, and a discussion about how to reuse, recycle discarded keyboards, household goods and toys. Participants engage in hacking (taking apart and repurposing) the keyboards and reprogram them to make one-of-a-kind external computer controllers.

The few days before the March 15-16 workshop, Christine Lee from City Studio and I went on a mission in the Mission for discarded goods to use in conjunction with the keyboards to make the controllers. We perused the thrift stores. Anything with movable parts makes a good trigger, so we collected old children's toys, sports equipment, kitchenware and other random household goods.

The first part of the workshop took place that weekend. In addition to City Studio students, Tammy Ko Robinson (Studio program Director), Christine Lee (Assistant Director), Conrad Meyers (SFAI grad), Amber Cady (Nexmap) and Kamau Patton (Studio instructor) were on hand to help and create! We began with an overview of what electronic waste is and what we can do to intervene in technological obsolescence. The City Studio students had been investigating the prison industrial complex so we also talked about the use of prison labor in electronics recycling. Discussion about the computer user interface and how we can create new ways of interaction with our controllers that moved beyond dominant narratives became the focal point. Kamau led an insightful discussion about how the movable toys we were using (analog interfaces) were analogous to the keyboard and mouse (digital interfaces). Those movable parts on a child's toy had a specific function that caused a reaction similar to the joystick or computer keyboard.

The technical objective of the workshop was to get 2-4 keys working on the new controllers so as to trigger onscreen images and create a simple computer video game. Students later would create their own onscreen narrative and custom images for the game. Working collaboratively over the 2-day workshop, both students and instructors learned how to disassemble or rather "hack" the old computer keyboards supplied by a local recycler (Computer Recycling Center). We soldered, taped and brainstormed ways to integrate the "detritus" with the keyboards to create unique controlling devices.

The weekend was a successful experience for all and introduced new ways to think about our role as consumers and consumer agency in terms of our interpersonal relationship with computer technology.

Since the March 15-16 workshop, City Studio has continued to work with the controllers and develop interactive narratives that will be exhibited and presented at SJ01.

I.C.E. Film Festival Results- top secret

The I.C.E./AYV 6th grade students have been viewing and voting upon the "Sustenance
and Sustainability: Plant Talk Back" animated videos all week. For 3 days, each class viewed
6 of the 18 films produced by their peers. At the end of the day's viewing,
each student received 2 ballots to cast a vote for their favorite films of the day.

On the 4th day of the week, each class could request up to 4 films they wanted to
review again. "Super delagate" ballots were handed out. Each student cast
two votes to nominate the best of all 18 films they viewed this week. They could
choose to split the vote between two films or cast both ballots for one film.

First Larp shoot (13th screen)

Well, we have to shoot again, though our shoot last week was great, we will add in with a new shoot tomorrow.

It was quite an intense experience. After deciding that our video was going to be a piece called Larpers in the City directed by my student Jonathan. The premise: An alchemist sends 9 identity-less deceiples out into the world to find themselves through the camera

Personally I found this to be quite an intense experience, feeling as if this is what we are always doing, what we look at becoming ourselves. I found myself looking for things I wanted, or began to need, when near things I specifically didn't want (loud people) I didn't know how to block them out, as ultimately they too would be in the camera. Hence Some things we purposely put into our identity, others.. just happen to us.

Here are some other paraphrases from the participants:

Plants Talk Back!

"Plants Talk Back!" is the result of a study by 6th grade digital art with earth science students at the Institute for Collaborative Education (I.C.E.) in NYC. The theme of their work is "Sustenance and Sustainability".

The students conducted a hands on scientific study of plant life by growing Lima beans. They grew two plants, a "control" plant and a second plant that they submitted to a "human" variable such as: nurturing with milk, talking to their subject, or allowing their subject to music.

In their Digital Art component the students imagined their plants having the ability to communicate with humans. The plants became anthropomorphic, expressing their basic sustenance and sustainability needs as well as desires, anxieties, reflections on humanity.
The human condition is paralleled in the lives of plants.

Today in our session was the most complex work that we have done. The tools that we used today were plenty. There was mylar paper to make the patterns and piping to make the lining of the leather look pretty. Of course there was leather, shoe glue to stick the leather to the shoes, and black shoe polish to change the original color of the shoe from blue to black.

Hello all,

Children's Discovery Museum projects are coming along very well with most kids in the final stages of production. We had the oppurtunity to exhbit some of the in-progress projects at a Youth Programs event at the museum a few days ago that was attended by about 100 people. The projects were met with much praise.

We have had a little trouble trying to post our works-in-progress to this blog for all to see, but hopefully they will be up soon.

Nueva projects at the Maker faire

Greetings from The Nueva School!

This past weekend we showed some of the projects we are showing at the at the tech museum in the Maker Faire!!

Here are some photographs of the Interactive Art (Robotics and Interface video Art projects) and also a couple of still images from the climate cartoons (animations) that are almost done.

The animation class just finished the Animatics and know we are starting the animation process.

The Interactive art class is now fixing some of the final details and we will be ready to go. We are very exited to be part of this show!

Kibera Youth Organize HIP HOP FILM FESTIVAL

Thanks to the commitment of the youth organizers, the second annual HIP HOP FILM FESTIVAL, held in Kibera, the largest slum in Nairobi, Kenya, was a big success. The Film Fest offers Kibera youth their only opportunity to view and discuss quality films from around the world.

Discussions about plan/ no plan – Ideas: what do we learn about these people, can we go through their trash, can I have sex in their bed? We’ll meet and ask them questions, about how to proceed. decision: let’s go there and see, less rules.

Hello all,
Things are moving along for each of our grant recipients! All five Fast Forward students have been in touch with their mentors about their progress and are posting updates to their blogs (here's one example). A week ago we had a screening of the students' rough cuts in the ICA theater, providing them with the chance to critique each other's work in the space where their final pieces will be shown at our public screening on May 30. Most of the students are still in the editing phase and getting feedback from their mentors to help move them along. More to come in the next few weeks!

freeDimensional/CIAC Time Capsule Project Update

The project is running along smoothly this month. The students have chosen growth as their subject matter. They want to show how much they have learned and achieved since starting school in the United States.

We've gotten the fantastic photographer Matilde Damele to work with the students. They're working to showcase their life including, family, friends, neighborhood and of course school. The photos will be set for the time capsule along with a audio interview done with a Podcast Workshop run by Tianna Kennedy of free103point9.org.

I look forward to next month when I will be able to put in some photos and maybe some audio on this blog.

Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose

After weeks of exploring the surrounding community of Downtown San Jose with digital SLRs, our 7 - 9th grade students have begun putting their photographs together on a timeline in Adobe Premier in order to create a multimedia slide show display of their work. The project will include pictures that they find the most representative of their community and pay the most attention to the stylistic properties of photography, as well as music, text, and vocal narration explaining why it is that they took these pictures and how it demonstrates the San Jose community in order to present a digital youth perspective on the Silicon Valley.

With our older students, grades 10 - 12, we have spent time refreshing everyones mind on the technical aspects of photography and have begun spreading out into our neighborhood. Children's Discovery Museum is located in an interesting and unique place in the city: to the Northeast lies the financial district, made up of many of Silicon Valley's high tech companies as well as restaurants and entertainment; to the south and west are low economic inner-city neighborhoods; and in every direction is the city's homeless population. Over the years, this combination has inspired many students in our program to investigate these idiosyncrasies of poverty amidst affluence, and for Zer01 our youth are doing the same thing with an artistic lens.

Hello everyone, here's some news from Skopje.

As I mentioned before, we are pass the formal workshop, and in a period of creating works, discussing ideas, progress, changing directions. Here is a short description of what we have been doing in the past period.

The process was split into official and non-official meetings, and so far we have finished the official (educative) ones, now we are only catching up with the participants and the works they are creating.

The first official meeting was held on March 6, where we went through the idea of the project, we discussed the situation in our city, the way young artists are working, how they are (under) represented, the process of creation and how it is influenced either by social conditions or some programming software. We discussed about the way of work we will choose, and we agreed to have a couple of educative sessions, where the participants will go through the basics of the programming language Processing*and consider doing their final works as generative artworks.

Nevertheless, we met again before the workshop in order to go through some major points in the digital arts history. We found this to be informative, as well as inspiring for the participants, since some of them haven’t had the chance to earn that kind of education. We discussed the way digital arts were developing, the role of the artist and the technology, the equipment, software, hardware, the mediation and influences…

In order to better understand the function of Processing, we discussed the physical environment, and how most of the design/animation/flash/graphic editing programs tend to reproduce the same conditions and parameters from the nature, and how Processing is different in that matter. The discussion was about better understanding of the application as a mediator in the process of creating a work of art.

We went through some basics in contemporary art, especially works that have been created as an environment, as a result of some interaction…

Participants were taught the basics of Processing, and shown how to manipulate the environment it offers and creates. They were also shown how they can use different materials as resources in their work with this tool (internet data, images, sounds). These two days of work were a period when they were able to assess if Processing is the right language for them to use in their work, and some of them decided they will do so, others decided they will use other applications and tools with keeping in mind what they have learned from the principles of Processing and Generative art.

So far, we are meeting separately with whoever needs discussion, exchange of opinions on what they are doing at the moment. We have arranged to meet up all together again this week, and check out on the progress. By now, everyone should have an idea they are working on and developing. I should also have some drafts soon, and will post them here for you. They will probably be in various formats, but I will look to have the basic motifs and ideas represented. In the meantime, we are also discussing all questions and ideas on our blog, and first results are to come in a couple of days.

Also, I have to say that all of your projects look great and looks like you’re all having a good time working. We are all learning from you a lot!

Digital Photo and Music at the Guggenheim

Hi—it’s Rachel from the Guggenheim.

The first half of our project is done! Which means that the real challenge begins now.

Last week, photographers and musicians put the finishing touches on their work, and handed over their pieces to their partners from the other class. This week, everyone listened to or looked at their partner's work, and started to plan their responses. Since the final products will be audio slide shows, the musicians must now create pieces that complement the photographs of their partners, while the photographers will interpret sound with their cameras (and maybe some Photoshop manipulation).

To make this even more complicated, the two classes come to the museum on different days, and therefore the partners have not yet met in person. They are communicating via letters (just like Kandinsky and Schoenberg did 100 years ago). The advantage to this arrangement is that it gives the artists a chance to reflect on their processes, and explain their ideas in writing to their peers.

We’ve put up an in-progress class website with all work done to date, so that the participants can revisit their partners’ work whenever they want. Have a look! (Files are large, so they might take a moment to download!)

Plans are underway in the Digital Studio @ UCR CMP to print our media murals large format through SPARC Murals, a non-profit arts center in Los Angeles famous for wall art over the last 30 years. We will do a day trip from Riverside into LA, 60 miles away, to oversee the work. Each student mural will be printed on canvas 20” high and 60” inches wide. The four artists featured here are Michele Hernandez, Oscar Cisneros, Matt Halcon, and Guadalupe Ortega. Exploring lowriders in San José, California, USA

We are a group of teens working with MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana

Hot Sun Foundation Youth Film Workshop

On April 5, 2008, Hot Sun Foundation held a unique event---bringing together 30 Kenyan film professionals with eleven youth from Kibera for a scriptwriting workshop facilitated by Mary Beth Fielder, University of Southern California, Senior Lecturer at the School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles, California, USA. Ms Fielder has written and directed a number of award winning films and was the adviser for the 2007 Emmy award winning short film KIBERA KID, written and directed by Nathan Collett.

Eleven youth from Kibera, Nairobi's largest slum, were chosen from 50 participants at a previous six day filmmaking workshop held March 24-29, 2008 at the Kenya Film Commission. Stephen Oloo, 19 years old, a participant in the workshop commented, "[It has] opened our eyes to see the power of stories in transforming lives and using film to change our future and destiny."

The eleven youth from Kibera interacted with Kenya film industry professionals during the scriptwriting workshop at the Kenya Film Commission. The workshop offered an exceptional opportunity for film industry professionals to further hone their skills working with Ms. Fielder and at the same time being role models for the eleven youth from Kibera, with the possibility of taking them on board as interns in forthcoming projects.

Hot Sun Foundation's goal is to build a core of talented and trained youth in Kibera to develop a global first -- a feature length dramatic film made in an African slum. Fielder recently joined the KIBERA KID feature film project as a co-producer.

In our third session we traced the decision maker circuit board onto the heels of our platforms. The other girls and I then cut around the traces to make a cavity to put our boards inside. After that was done we then made our alarms, provided by Norene who brought the alarm kits. We cut out our piping that would later be shrunk by this pipe shrinker. This was done so that the wires of the alarms and the batteries would stick together. Later the alarms were tested and they worked pretty loud and well.

In our second session with project walkway we worked with rubber. Before that, Yael Kanarek, a resident at Eyebeam, came in and talked about the work she had done with rubber and how it was handy. The class later took their words of rubber, which were cut out by the laser cutter, and stapled them to the soles of their sneakers/shoes. They walked on paper and left foot print messages. Students also started designing their project walkway shoes.

Project Walkway is a collaboration between Norene Leddy and Eyebeam, whose Girls- Eye View (GEV) program was developed to get girls involved in technology. Project Walkway is a workshop in which young women chosen thorough the GEV program will create custom hacks for existing footwear. Through the workshop they will learn prototyping skills, basic electronics and presentation skills. Working in a supportive, female-centered environment they will be encouraged to ask questions and get comfortable developing their own ideas.

The 6-week program will start with lectures and discussions about the significance of shoes in society. Shoes have always been closely linked with identity and social status, key issues for adolescent girls, from the chopines of 16th century Venice, to Manolo Blahnik stilettos, to the The Aphrodite Project: Platforms, which opens the conversation to issues of sex, sex work, the role of contemporary artists in society, police protection and personal safety.

After this, students will start work on the design and functionality of their own shoe projects, developing hacks based on their individual experiences and needs. We will work beyond aesthetic concerns, investigating issues of personal safety and utility – what would be helpful for young women today who navigate the streets of New York City. Research will be accompanied by sketching, brainstorming and debate until two final designs are created, with functionality dictated by the students. Hacks will range from simple to complex, from hidden compartments to LEDs and alarm systems.

The GEV participants will also meet and work alongside two of Eyebeam’s current Research & Development Fellows, Ayah Bdeir and Jessica Banks, highly skilled female engineers whose work as artists and designers operates in concert with the project. The participating Eyebeam Fellows will discuss their practice with regards to developing physical computing projects related to issues of cultural and feminine identity, and support the design and fabrication process of the GEV shoes.

The program will end with a runway show and book launch of Sabine Seymour's Fashionable Technology: The Intersection of Design, Fashion, Science and Technology, on May 22. Girls Eye View: Project Walkway begins March 27 and runs Thursdays through May 8.

Hi there to everyone in ZER01. My name is Theresa and I am a digital artist working with City Arts, an innovative participatory arts organisation based in Nottingham. www.city-arts.org.uk

We are very excited about our public digital art project 'Urban Outsiders' and especially honoured to be part of such a wonderfully diverse global community.

Urban Outsiders asks: All people are meant to be the benefactors but wild animals and plants are the least considered when property developers and government officials decide upon a cities design. Using digital technology, how can we reveal and re-present this hidden, wild community, and transform the streets they are excluded from?

The workshop participants and I will be roaming derelict sites in Nottingham earmarked for regeneration searching for the plants and creatures that have been left to benefit from the sites until the bulldozers arrive. This imagery will then form a database of imagery for developing large scale live projections onto buildings in Nottingham (see image). The workshops begin mid April.

We have recently been sorting out allot of administrative issues surrounding the project such as New Tax Year Funds and an unusually early Easter and their effects upon our time table. I thought it might be helpful to take a closer look at this end of producing youth projects by creating a little behind the scenes documentary called 'Creatively Managing Urban Outsiders'.

we finished the official part of our project (workshop and tutoring), our participants are now developing their works. some of them will make a generative art piece, some of them in a medium of their choice...

Quick update from Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose

Hello,

Just a quick update as we move along with our project. Youth from our middle school have taken thousdans of pictures with our digital SLRs. For each picture they take, they are required to document a brief description of what the picture is and why they chose to take it. Now we are going to move into a critical discussion of their photos, both from a stylistic perspective as well as content-specific.

In our program we spend a lot of time learning about economic disparities in our city and county and spend time volunteering in community-based organization such as Sacred Heart Community Service and Emergency Housing Consortium that serve those in need. Our project for 01 will combine what they have learned through these experiences as well as the photography skills and visual arts skills they have learned so far this year.

ICA New Work Mentor Grant Program

Here you can follow along the progress of each student's work as well as see the list of artist mentors who have joined up with the project.

5 ICA Fast Forward video students ultimately submitted New Work Grant proposals. These proposals were sent to the review committee and were received very well. Each student scored highly, and each student was awarded the full requested amount. (Most of them requested only enough to feed their cast and crew on long shoot days, but one needed money for a permit/security to video tape on the commuter train.)

Initially I was going to have the students find professional artists in the Boston area to act as mentors, but what I did instead was to send out a request to those that I knew, inviting them to be on a roster of artists. The students can then look through this roster and choose the person they want to work with. The mentor's role is to check in with the student weekly, following the progress of the work through the student's blog.

The students received their acceptance letters last week. They were very excited. And this week they receive their funds and communicate with their prospective mentors. They are all already in producition mode for their films, so the mentoring will take place during the editing stage.

We are The Nueva School, an internationally recognized progressive independent school serving gifted and talented students that emphasizes integrated studies, creative arts, and social-emotional learning; and I am Daniela Steinsapir, the teacher of the art program selected to be part of the festival.

We are developing Interactive video Art projects, where kids learn about Art, conceptual art, Interface design, video art, robotics, electronics and history of experimental art. The kids are developing projects from their own imagination, after doing extensive research on New Media Art. The projects varies from Installation video interactive projects about global warming to musical robotic sculptures. We are in the process of finishing up the building phase, to start testing the interactivity soon.

Also the Climate Cartoons class will be also part of the festival. They are making short animated films to help spread global warming message. We are working together with Climate Cartoons a non-profit organization that is looking for short, inspiring films that motivate people to "Do Something" to help fight global warming, to distribute them all around the world. In this class the kids learn the basics of animation, color theory, perspective, story telling, character development and they also do an extensive research on International cartoons. We are in the process of finishing up the animatics to soon start the animation process and the adding of sound effetcs.

I’m Nita Hadzihamza, a graphic design student at New Bulgarian University in Sofia, Bulgaria.

I’m one of the seven young artists chosen to be part of the Consumer vs. User 2.0 project. Digital arts make me happy. Being part of this project makes me feel happy and exited since I’ve been feeling the lack of this kind of projects in the past few years. Hey all! I'm Reggie Woolery, curator of education at the University of California, Riverside's California Museum of Photography on ARTSblock. We have a group of young people coming to our Digital Studio on Saturday afternoons for the last six weeks learning about the history of mural-making in southern California -- and hopefully how we can mosh graffiti styles with the old styles to make something digitally new.

The instructor is William Bejarano a painter, muralist, and graphic artist. So there has been lots of drawing, photography in local neighborhoods, learning about digi-graphics, and recently a field trip into Los Angeles for a symposium on 1970s mural-making, featuring a number of incredible artists.

For our students this class has given them a chance to break out the sketchbooks and pick up ideas from the visual history and urban energy. We're happy to be a part of this group and look forward to seeing everyone's project and getting to know a few of you better.

Hot Sun Foundation is working with youth in Kibera, the largest slum in east Africa, located in Nairobi, Kenya. We are the only organization in Kibera focusing on social transformation through art and media.

Hello from the Education Department at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. We’ve just completed session three of our ten-session program, which means that our students are in the midst of preparing their first projects.

This spring, we are offering two separate (but related) workshops for high school artists: a digital photography class, and an electronic music class. The photographers are constructing series of original pictures while the musicians are creating experimental music pieces. At the halfway point in the program, each student will swap work with someone from the other class. The students will then begin a second project, inspired by the work of their partner. The final works will be audio slideshows, comprised of photographs and music together.

The structure for this program evolved from a conversation about the painter Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and his friendship with composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951). Kandinsky, an important artist in the Guggenheim’s collection, believed that painting and music were strongly related and that that he and Schoenberg were addressing synonymous ideas, but through different mediums.

With Kandinsky’s ideas in mind, we designed a program that we hope will allow high-school-age artists to be inspired by a variety of sources, be it in their own medium or in another.

Hello this is Arthur Bouie. I'm the Special Project Associate for Freedimensional and the Center for International Arts in Community. I'm writing for our Syndicate 19 school program.

CIAC's Syndicate 19 program offers collaborations with local youth in our arts and media literacy program, which operates in conjunction with the International High School at Prospect Heights. We are focusing on projects that enable artists to work with educators to empower local high school students to investigate and document their world critically and creatively. Our program is multi-disciplined offering the students a chance to work with many mediums from digital photography to the web.

Our 01 project will be a time capsule with the graduating class that focuses on the growth experienced by the students of International High School at Prospect Heights during their time in this country. This is the first group of high school graduating students, and it is an honor to showcase their achievements. First, a bit about our media-based afterschool program, Discovery Youth. Discovery Youth is a free program for youth in grades 5th - 12th. Our program breaks down into three basic elements: digital photography, film, and web. Projects focus around the interests and concerns of program participants, typically centering on issues of community and culture, giving a voice to our diverse group. In addition, Discovery Youth fulfils a number of service learnig projects in Silicon Valley by volunteering at various organizations in the area. In the past we have been involved with Adobe Youth Voices, Cinequest, and 01 San Jose, among others. Our work is also displayed on the official Discovery Youth website, http://www.getchy.com/. Our 01 project will be an extension of our digital photography/Photoshop unit of this year. Because 01 will be held in our wonderful city, and becuase the youth in our program feel very connected to San Jose, our project will be based on how youth see their community, showcasing the elements of San Jose they feel deserve to be seen by a larger audience. It is very exciting for us to be participating in the festival this year.

Fast Forward, ICA/Boston

This is Joe Douillette, director of the Fast Forward Program at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Massachusetts. The Fast Forward Program is an after school video art program for high-school students. Most of our students come from the Boston Public Schools. They meet at the ICA once a week for a full school year.

Our ZER01 project is an exciting addition to our existing video art program. It is designed to help the students who have been in the program for multiple years achieve the next level of artistry, professionalism and self-sufficiency. We have designed a grant process for the students that will allow them to request financial support for their spring productions. As part of the grant, the students are required to define and describe their work, plan a budget, document their process and seek out and engage with a professional Boston-area artist as a mentor.

A number of area professionals will serve as a grant review committee. Some of them will also serve as the artist/mentors for the students. The students will have to be in regular communication with the mentor, and they will have to present their work to the committee as well.

As our students leave our program, we want them to be comfortable seeking out new artistic communities. We also want them to be confident in their abilities to dream up and present their work to those that can offer support. We hope that this experience will help them gain that confidence.

We are very excited. The students proposals are due today. We will keep you posted.

Hello from Skopje - Macedonia!

hi this is Ivana writing, on behalf of LINE Initiative and Movement from Skopje. I am 25 yrs old artist/activist now working with LINE, the creators of the project Consumer vs. User 2.0.

This is a continuation of an earlier Consumer vs. User project from 2007, which featured workshops on history of sound art and hardware; technology: use of open source tools, production, publishing/internet publishing, radio technology and VJ-ing. participants were young creative people active in various new media fields.

the 2.0 version is dedicated to theoretical and practical education of youth in the area of digital arts, focusing on generative arts and open source tools for creation. participants are 7 young artists (20-21 yrs old) that were chosen through an open call. they have interest in graphic and web design, character development, video animation and visual poetry.

young artists in Macedonia are not encouraged to resort to alternative, new or experimental media, so our main goal is to create and support the core of people that will further spread the idea, attract more young artists willing to experiment and use new media or digital expression, collaborate and increase in number.

essentially, consumer vs. user 2.0 is created to fully service, support and promote young upcoming new media artists.

we will develop ideas and visualize them through generative arts practices, and finally choose the best one to send to the festival. I personally am very excited to work with young artists in skopje, especially because of the rigid conditions we still face from time to time. we plan to update you with materials from our meetings and lectures, photos and videos from artists' studio visits, some ideas, comments... and hope to see a lot from you!

Hello from I.C.E. NYC

Hi. I am Meryl Meisler, digital art teacher (and Admissions Director) at Institute for Collaborative Education in NYC.
I.C.E. is a small, progressive grades 6-12 NYC public school.

Here is some information about our "Sustenance and Sustainability" project:
The interdisciplinary project (art, technology, science, environmental studies, writing...) will be created by our 63 6th grade students. The students go to science (teacher Yvette Valdez) every day for 50 minutes. They go to Digital Art (teacher Meryl) four times a week.

We received a Forestry Bus Tour Grant, and will take the 6th grade to the Croton Reservoir during the month of April. The students will meet and interview environmentalists to learn about maintaining and sustaining our water system. We will document with video and still images the sites and sounds of the Croton system. We plan to create multi-media PSAs about Sustenance and Sustainability of the NYC Reservoir System.

In addition, the students are creating "The Comic Life of Plants", animated movies with voice overs that educate the viewer about the life and times of plants- what they need for sustenance and how to sustain them.

We are so psyched!

Program Documentation:
A key component of the O1SJ Adobe Global Youth Voices program is documentation of the process of each group working with the youth in their community. The hope is that through this grant program and exhibition, more attention and excitement can be generated for those engaging youth via new and innovative artistic tools and practice. Therefore, we ask that each participating group share the individual methods they have developed for working with youth with documentation of the process and implementation of the program funded by the 01SJ Youth International Micro-Grant. As a place to house and collect the documentation of each group, a blog site is being developed. The hope is that the blog site will also act as a forum for the individuals, collaborators and organizations involved to meet, share insights and engage in open discussion regarding the issues and successes of their programming. The blog entries will serve to narrate the process of putting such programming into place, and be included in the exhibition of 01SJ Youth International in June 2008.

Documentation guidelines:
The documentation of your program is meant to be a natural extension of your program, and not a hindrance. You should post in any way that is comfortable.
Blog entries can include but are not limited to:

links to/urls of inspirations that lead to the development of the project/program
journal entries re: planning meetings and progress reports
annotated photo/video documentation of the program in progress
sound or written interviews with or entries by the participants,
any documents used to facilitate or evaluate the program

We are open and just excited to see your progress online!

Each group must provide an initial post with the name of your name, group, organization, collective, etc., the project name, a brief discussion, the number of youth you are serving (an estimate is fine), the goals of the project, and your projected outcome (ie the medium/form the work generated by the youth will take).

1-2 posts per month, after signing the contract and beginning the project--through May.
